Entries from August 2008

Funny: I’m sitting in my room right now, watching Radiohead’s performance (live) in Santa Barbara on Radiohead TV. As I am watching (and hating myself for hating the music industry’s ridiculously high prices on concert tickets… I should have spent the $75!), I decide to update here. And they begin to play The Bends. This is when the above picture finishes uploading. When I took this picture, I was thinking about the fascination all of the children had with the gorilla. There were more kids at one time in the gorilla exhibit than in any other exhibit in the zoo, and most of them were crowded around this glass wall, reaching out to this large, sad-looking gorilla sitting by the window. And I am thinking to myself, as I am making this post: How bad does this gorilla have The Bends? I understand that zoos, especially the Smithsonian zoo, are there to help these creatures that wouldn’t have made it in the wild. It doesn’t make me feel any less sad for this gorilla stuck in a concrete and glass cage with the same tree to climb on day after day.

i wish
i wish
i wish that something would happen
i want to live and breathe
i want to be part of the human race”

My mom actually noticed this shot before I did. It would have been better if my dad was looking at the meercat, but what can you do? I didn’t want to ruin the shot.
On another note, my little sister is moving into college this weekend. How scary! It makes me feel so old. Classes start next week for me, and I must say that I am looking forward to it very much. While sitting around my apartment doing Absolutely Nothing is great, it gets old. Fast.
I have also decided that I am going to start shooting film. Often. Will has been shooting it, and it looks so glorious. I need some glory in my life.

There were so many flamingos, all in this curly position. It was almost unsettling.

Emily’s rendition of a bird with a wattle. The bird we were looking at had quite the impressive wattle. Not like Emily’s though… not a bit. The Smithsonian zoo was one of the coolest zoos I have ever been to. And it was free! And they didn’t rape you for a bottle of water! And despite the heat, there were still some animals out and playing (surviving?). Exciting!

It’s the same in every big city: tourists lost and clueless, commuters reading their newspapers, mothers trying to keep track of their children, and students with their iPods trying to look cool and nonchalant. I like the subway because it forces people to slow down for at least a few minutes.
